Biography
Dr. Connie Whittaker Dunlop develops leaders, teams, and organizations through coaching and training. Connie has more than a decade of leadership development experience at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, where she taught three courses and coached more than 1,500 students on topics related to the personal and professional transformation that often occurs in business school. Connie also has experience developing teams and organizations for Deloitte and then for Capital One, where she led enterprise transformation projects that involved implementing strategy, process, policy, and/or technology changes through people. Connie holds a doctorate in human and organizational learning from George Washington University, an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, and a BSBA from the University of Richmond. She also earned a Leadership Coaching for Organizational Performance certificate from George Mason University. The International Coaching Federation recognizes her as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC).

Connie Dunlop, Darden’s executive director for professional advancement, says the EMBA class receives even more attention than other postgraduate business students because they have a lot more going on in their lives, juggling study and work. “These students are so busy with all these aspects of their lives that it is difficult for them to show up and present themselves well in job interviews,” she says. “We think it is particularly important for them to know how to tell their stories.”

The greater challenge that schools face is getting students to open up on sensitive issues. Coaching was previously mandatory for EMBAs at Darden; three years ago the school made it optional. “We found that students who were forced tended not to engage,” says Connie Whittaker Dunlop, executive director for professional advancement. “They need to volunteer and be willing to open up to benefit.”
