His current research interests focus on the delivery of quality care, the science of medical errors and patient safety, international health, and health policy. He is internationally recognized for outcomes research and his work has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine and The New York Times.

Dr. Makary is also a champion for many innovative ideas in healthcare, including videotaping medical procedures so that patients can take home a copy for their records, lifting all restrictions on visiting hours in hospitals, as pioneered at Johns Hopkins, to promote family involvement, and allowing patients to see their doctor’s notes in real-time.

He completed his education at Bucknell University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Harvard University and his general surgery residency at Georgetown University. He then completed advanced training in pancreas surgery at Johns Hopkins before joining the faculty as a GI surgeon.

Author – Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won't Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care (professional)

2012-09-18

As a busy surgeon who has worked in many of the best hospitals in the nation, Dr. Marty Makary can testify to the amazing power of modern medicine to cure. But he’s also been a witness to a medical culture that routinely leaves surgical sponges inside patients, amputates the wrong limbs, and overdoses children because of sloppy handwriting. Unaccountable is a powerful, no-nonsense, non-partisan diagnosis for healing our hospitals and reforming our broken healthcare system.

Author – General Surgery Review, 2nd Edition (professional)

2008-01-25

General Surgery Review is a comprehensive review presented in a unique case-based format. Dr. Marty Makary has assembled the review in conjunction with his colleagues and many other national experts. Unlike many other books, General Surgery Review excludes controversial management in order to present an easy-to-remember foundation of knowledge. Thus, the book focuses on "the basics" to provide the reader with a broad command of the field.
