Biography

Kem Washington joined the faculty in September 2006 as an instructor in the Department of Accounting. She holds a certified public accountant license.

Ms. Kemberley ”Kem” Washington is a Certified Public Accountant and personal financial writer. Prior to joining the faculty at Dillard University, Kem has had the opportunity to work for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a Special Agent in its Criminal Investigation Division and also as a Revenue Agent for the Small Business and Self-Employed Division.

During her tenure at Dillard University, Kem authored proposals and received funding from the Louisiana Board of Regents to receive approximately $70,000 of funding, which she utilized to establish the Small Business Accounting Center at the institution. She has also been instrumental in securing funding geared to Dillard University’s College of Business for the purpose of establishing sponsorships, scholarships, and other types of funding to support the college.

She has had the opportunity to serve as president of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) New Orleans chapter, treasurer of both the New Orleans Outreach Board and Una Mano of New Orleans, and as a board member of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants – Nonprofit and Financial Literacy committees. Moreover, Kem has been selected as one out of only thirty young leaders across the nation to participate in the AICPA Leadership Academy and has been featured in the Journal of Accountancy, 125th anniversary edition.

She has hosted, Disaster Finance, a radio show geared toward helping the citizens of New Orleans to financially prepare for natural disasters. She has been featured on the AICPA’s website, Thiswaytocpa.com. In addition, she has also appeared on WVUE Fox Channel 8 News, WDSU New Orleans, The Gary Clark Show, WBOK – 1230AM, The Louisiana Business Journal, and The Monica Pierre Show.

Kem has earned numerous awards, including the Financial Service Professionals (FSP) Paul S. Mills Award, Dillard University’s Outstanding Teacher and Dean’s Awards, and the ING Summer Scholarship Award.

She has contributed to The New Orleans Tribune, The AICPA CPA Insider, City Business, Herlifeapp, and other newspaper and media outlets. She frequently contributes to her personal finance blog, kemberley.com, which is designed to provide financial savvy tips to young adults.
