What Every Product Manager Needs To Know About Online Privacy

Online privacy is emerging as a key issue for social media/Web 2.0 websites and websites in general, as illustrated by the many recent controversies surrounding Facebook's privacy policy and various online privacy controversies in the European Union. An effective privacy policy could mean the difference between long-term success for a company or significant risks to the company's brand and revenues. This seminar will introduce the issue and describe the potential for new privacy laws in the US and in the EU that could affect the business model of social medial/Web 2.0/mobile app vendors. It will then explain the sources of lack of privacy, drawing upon the experience of the information security field, but without getting into technology issues. The presentation concludes with recommendations for actions by product managers to ensure that a company's business model can survive even if new privacy laws are enacted.
