M.T. Davidson Public School in Callandar, Ontario is banning cartwheels in the schoolyard.

Citing student safety and in an effort to prevent an injury that hasn’t happened – cartwheels have now joined a growing list of banned activities banned from schoolyards, including dodgeball, red rover and in some cases any ball you can kick.

Cartwheels, which have been practiced on playgrounds, in backyards and parks planet-wide by boys and girls alike, are cost-free and up until now a relatively low-risk activity.

But are cartwheels really the problem?  That’s where the experts from Cambrian College can help.

Lynn Kabaroff is a professor of Physical Fitness Management. She is a registered kinesiologist with extensive knowledge in sports injuries and physical fitness. The reality is, kids simply aren’t being taught the basics in physical education to know who do outdoor activities properly or even safely. Kabaroff is launching a  program around “Physical Literacy” in which kids are taught how to properly do things like run, jump, throw a ball, catch a ball and maybe even cartwheels.
