SUU Wins Best of State in Three Categories2018-06-25
Southern Utah University has added three more titles to its impressive list of accolades, winning Utah’s Best of State in the educational institution, curriculum development, and volunteer service categories.
“This is a powerful validation of the high impact learning practices that SUU has adopted,” said Provost Brad Cook. “Our students are the direct beneficiaries of our dedicated faculty and staff who work hard in creating transformation learning environments.”
The Best of State Awards recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Utah, determined based on achievement in the field of endeavor, innovation in approaches, techniques, methods or processes, and contribution to the quality of life. The honor would not be possible without the innovative and dedicated faculty and staff.
Earl Mulderink, Director of the Community Engagement Center, considers the award to be a demonstration of SUU's fidelity to fulfilling its mission and in assisting students to be fully prepared for diverse challenges and opportunities in the 21st century.
“This statewide honor underscores SUU's status as a Carnegie Community Engaged institution, a designation earned first in 2010 and claimed by only 360 other colleges and universities in the country,” said Mulderink. “In fact, this award should help in our application to be named again as a Carnegie Community Engaged institution in 2020."
Dr. Matthew Nickerson, Associate Dean of Library Services and one of the designers of SUU’s innovative general education program, said “it's been a joy and privilege to work alongside my colleagues in Jumpstart to create a unique integrated general education curriculum. Teaching and working with students across the disciplines has been educational, challenging and fun for all of us. It is awesome to be a part of this amazing learning community.”
Director of Outdoor Engagement, Dr. Briget Eastep, believes the honor reflects SUU’s core values.
“According to our mission, SUU is a ‘dynamic teaching and learning community that engages students in experiential education leading to personal growth, civic responsibility, and professional excellence.’” said Eastep. “The awards recognize faculty, staff, and students across campus living this mission. I, of course, am most proud of the outdoor programs engaging students with the natural world and public lands to pursue their passions, gain professional skills, and make a difference.”
