Dr. Charles Chan received his M.D. from the University of Toronto in 1981. He completed his Internal Medicine & Pulmonary Medicine training at the University of Toronto & Yale University in the USA. Dr. Chan also completed a Medical Research Council of Canada fellowship as a Visiting Scholar at the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale. His academic research is in applied clinical epidemiology. Dr. Chan has completed Quality and Patient Safety courses at the IHI and Physician Leaders conferences organized by the CPSO.

Dr. Chan joined the Faculty of Medicine at the U of T in 1987. Dr. Chan’s main clinical and research interest is in infectious complications in the lungs and interstitial lung diseases. He has over 110 original publications and contributed 26 book chapters. Dr. Chan was promoted to Professor of Medicine in 2005.

Over the past decade, Dr. Chan has shifted from a Clinician-Investigator to a Clinician-Administrator at both the hospital and university. His hospital leadership roles include the medical director of the Thoracic Business Unit and Endoscopy services at UHN, Head of Respirology at UHN and MSH Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee, at UHN. University leadership roles Interim Head of Respirology at Sunnybrook Hospital and Women's College Hospital. He is currently Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine, responsible for Clinical Faculty Affairs & Quality at UHN in January 2009.

External leadership positions over the last twenty years include: President of the Ontario Thoracic Society, Examiner for the adult Respirology examining board of Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Chan is currently the Lead Respirology peer-assessor for the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces Medical Peer Review. Dr. Chan is a member of the CAHOProvincial Physician leaders council and the CAHO Practice and Education Committee.
