Eugenia L. Weiss is a bilingual-bicultural (Spanish) California licensed clinical social worker and licensed psychologist. Weiss maintained a private practice for 18 years working with military personnel and their families as well as working in community mental health and administration. She is the author and co-author of multiple peer-reviewed journal publications and books. Weiss is co-author of the Civilian Counselor's Primer to Counseling Veterans (2nd ed., Linus Books, 2011) and co-editor of the Handbook of Military Social Work (Wiley & Sons, 2013); Supporting Student Veterans in Higher Education: A Primer for Administrators, Faculty and Academic Advisors (Oxford University Press, 2015); Transformative Social Work Practice (Sage, 2015) and The Civilian Lives of U.S. Veterans: Issues and Identities (Praeger/ABC-CLIO).
Her research interests include military social work; student veterans in higher education, virtual learning environments and leadership.
Weiss joined the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work in 2005 as a part-time adjunct instructor then in 2008 became a full-time faculty member. She helped launch the San Diego Academic Center in 2009 and the military social work track. Weiss has also taught at various academic centers and held leadership roles. Weiss served as the Interim Director of the San Diego Academic Center and is the current director of the Orange County Academic Center in Irvine, CA.

This article illustrates the types of situations that U.S. uniformed social workers have experienced in combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan with the purpose of preparing current and future social workers to effectively serve military and veteran clients in either military or civilian settings. Vignettes demonstrate the application of the military social work competencies as delineated by the Council on Social Work Education based on the 2008 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.
