Every day, 90 Americans are dying from overdosing on opioids such as prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic drugs such as fentanyl – more than 300,000 deaths since 2000. It is a serious crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare, according to the federal National Institute on Drug Abuse. President Trump has declared it a national public health emergency, and called on every executive agency to use its power to fight the epidemic. But can he deliver? And how did we even get here?

Hofstra professor Dr. Genevieve Weber, a licensed mental health counselor and an expert on heroin addiction and substance abuse, can help explain what is needed from health care, government, and law enforcement leaders to help solve this problem. She can also discuss treatment options as well as the toll heroin addiction takes on families, including her own.
