How a Gap Year Prepares Students for College

U.S. News & World Report  online

2019-03-08

At Elon University in North Carolina, where approximately 10 students per class take a gap year, there is a similar deferral policy in place. "Increasingly, I think students are aware that it could be in their best interest to take some time for alternative learning rather than a traditional transition to college. I also think the things that draw students to Elon (service, research, leadership, internship and global study) are the kinds of experiences that students find appealing to do during a gap experience. Often gap requests come from very high achieving students who are self-aware and will perform better in a college environment after a gap experience. And often, they do," Greg Zaiser, vice president for enrollment at Elon, wrote in an email.

The private, liberal arts school Elon University said they have rescinded admission offers based off of what has appeared on an incoming student’s social media account. Greg Zaiser, vice president for enrollment at Elon said, “Things have clearly contradicted the university honor code and values. I cannot stress enough the importance of appropriate use of social media, period.” But, students can also use their accounts to catch the attention of a university they have their eyes on. Zaiser said if a student uses an Elon hashtag on a campus visit, they are likely to be noticed during the application review process.

Elon University in Elon, North Carolina, began using ZeeMee Story in fall 2015 as a way to invigorate its admissions process and has since adopted ZeeMee Community, which features additional tools requiring a purchase. “The idea of the video piece of the admissions application is exciting because, for a long time, admissions applications have been pretty stagnant,” Greg Zaiser, Elon University vice president for enrollment, told EdScoop. “We’re always trying to get to know students, and we don’t require interviews, so by encouraging a ZeeMee profile, it helped … the admissions committee get to know the students a little better,” he said.
