Biography
Dr. Gregory Lee's work is driven by an interest in retrieving the Christian tradition for constructive theological ends. After establishing roots in evangelicalism through the undergraduate campus ministries at Princeton University and the M.Div. at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, he began the Ph.D. in Christian Theological Studies at the Duke University Graduate Program in Religion. His time there both strengthened his sense of identification with classic Christianity and broadened his appreciation for Christianity’s rich intellectual heritage. It also sparked a love for Augustine and especially City of God, a remarkable text that has profoundly shaped his thought and will remain central for his future work.
His first book, Today When You Hear His Voice: Scripture, the Covenants, and the People of God, concerns the appropriation of pre-modern interpreters for contemporary understandings of Scriptural authority, drawing especially on Augustine, Calvin, and the Epistle to the Hebrews. His next major project, Sin and Sectarianism: An Augustinian Theology of Ecclesial Division, will explore Augustine’s understanding of ecclesial sin and its implications for church division and the church-world relationship. He has long felt a calling to teach, and he is grateful for the opportunity to engage such highly motivated students at Wheaton. The Department of Biblical and Theological Studies provides many resources for cross-disciplinary inquiry, and The Wheaton Center for Early Christian Studies offers a unique context to explore a kind of evangelical ressourcement.
