Biography

Harry Hunter Jr. is a licensed clinical social worker and industrial/organizational psychologist. He is a clinical assistant professor of social work with the Virtual Academic Center, where he teaches in both the Master of Social Work and Doctor of Social Work programs. He teaches the following courses: Social Work and Business Contexts and Policies (672); Managing Diversity in the Global Context (681); Policy Advocacy and Social Change (536); and Strategic Innovations for the Grand Challenges (704).

Prior to his appointment at USC, Hunter held a faculty position at Wayne State University's School of Social Work in Detroit, Michigan, teaching classes on human behavior in the social environment and diversity, oppression and social justice. He was also an adjunct professor with the University of Detroit Mercy College of Liberal Arts and Education, teaching classes on social conflict, managed behavioral health care and employee-assistance programs.

Hunter has had extensive experience working in leadership roles. For more than 13 years, he was director of the State of Michigan's Employee Service Program, where he served as administrator for the planning, organizing and managing of the employee-assistance program and traumatic incident stress management services for State of Michigan employees. During this period, he was appointed to serve on the State Employees Charitable Campaign Steering Committee, and in 2007 received a certificate of tribute for his contributions from then-Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Hunter was previously an administrator with Harbor Oaks Hospital in New Baltimore, Michigan, a 64-bed acute care psychiatric hospital. He also served as director of the Behavioral Medicine for Health Alliance Plan in Detroit, where he managed the delivery of behavioral health care services to 530,000 members. Hunter's other leadership roles were as executive director of the Intake, Assessment and Referral Center for Genesee County and as group vice president for Eastwood Clinics, where he managed multiple hospital-based management contracts.

Hunter is a member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (Division 14) of the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the Employee Assistance Society of North America and the Employee Assistance Professionals Association.
