Biography

Dr. Ballard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Criminology and Justice Studies. She received her Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM. Her graduate work emphasized social theory and global development issues, with a regional emphasis on Latin America. Areas of expertise include classical and contemporary sociological theory, global social change and development, and environmental sociology. Issues of social justice are of special interest in her work. Courses currently taught include classical social theory, contemporary social theory, racial and ethnic relations, global social change, environmental sociology, and urban sociology.

2005 One of the greatest pedagogical challenges for those teaching even the most fundamental concepts of social theory is getting most students to recognize the value of critically analyzing society and culture. In a world where the power of media to shape human perception looms ever larger, and the willingness to employ critical thinking for civic engagement seems challenged at best, the task of teaching even basic theoretical constructs to enable meaningful social analysis is daunting.
