Biography

KATHLEEN WOODRUFF is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Nursing, where she teaches courses on clinical pharmacology for advanced practice nursing and management of adult patients. Prior to joining USC, she served as an instructor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

She identifies herself primarily as a clinician, educator and researcher. Her clinical focus is HIV, substance abuse and frequently occurring comorbid conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hepatitis C. She also focused on areas such as health care disparities and social determinants of health. As an educator, she has worked extensively with both adult and family nurse practitioner students.

Woodruff is a member of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, American College of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland. She serves as a reviewer for multiple journals and books, including The Journal for Nurse Practitioners, Journal of Professional Nursing and American Nurse Today. She received her doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nursing from the University of Maryland.

2013 Spirituality and religion are frequently acknowledged as significant contributors to individuals’ recovery from substance use disorders. This review focuses on the role that spirituality or religion plays in substance abuse treatment outcomes. Our search of three databases PubMed, CINAHL, and Psych Info turned up 29 eligible studies for review. We group our findings according to whether the study’s focus was on alcohol only or alcohol and other drug use.
