Biography

Lori Berard is the Nurse Manager at the WRHA Health Sciences Centre Diabetes Research Group and has spent 27 years working as a diabetes educator. She is a well-known speaker and presenter nationally as well as internationally. She volunteers locally and nationally for Diabetes Canada, including as the Chair of the National Diabetes Education Section, an executive member of the Clinical Practice Guideline Committee, Associate Editor for Canadian Journal of Diabetes, member of the National Research Council and recently chaired the CDA/Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism Conference in Winnipeg.

Lori was honoured by Diabetes Canada with the Diabetes Educator of the Year Award for 2009, as well the Special Dedication Award in 2003, and in 2000 the Health Sciences Centre awarded her with the Award of Nursing Excellence. In 2015, Lori was honoured with Diabetes Canada’s Charles H. Best Award as a health-care professional who has made significant contributions nationally towards the quality of life of individuals affected by diabetes. A member of the executive committee for the Diabetes Canada’s 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines, she was also a chapter author.

In her work as a certified diabetes educator, she specializes in the education and clinical management of patients within clinical research programs, and remains active in the development of educational programs related to innovative and new therapies in diabetes management.

She has published numerous works in peer-reviewed publications. Her areas of interest are innovative strategies for the management of diabetes, insulin therapy, self-monitoring of blood glucose and self-management education. She is an appointed member of the Section of Endocrinology Department of Medicine, University of Manitoba.
