Youth Sport Development Through Soccer: An Evaluation of an After-School Program Using the TPSR Model

Physical Education

2017 The Soccer Coaching Club program used the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model in an after-school soccer program for sixth grade boys between 11 and 12 years old in a local middle school. Soccer, as the featured physical activity, provided the “hook” for regular attendance. Desired outcomes included improved self-control, respect, and cooperation with others. Research efforts included formative program evaluation, focusing on fidelity to the TPSR model, and summative evaluations of immediate effects on participant understanding of TPSR concepts and participant behavior as part of the program evaluation. The population was of particular interest. The program participants were predominantly Latino, a population for which the TPSR model has not been extensively researched. A mixed methods approach was used, and data were gathered through a validated survey instrument, a program narrative, and postprogram interview with the participants’ classroom teachers. Program evaluation using the two-factor model of analysis of the survey data yielded statistically significant improvements in the factor of social responsibility, although no statistically significant change was measured in the second area, personal responsibility.

Baseball Across America: Minneapolis

Ballpark Digest

2015 As we said goodbye to the rugged, wide-open spaces of Pioneer League country, we said hello to the flat lands that Garrison Keillor might describe as being “on the edge of the prairie.” Minneapolis was a special stop for us on this great odyssey. We had a home to stay in, courtesy of our friend Dawn, who along with her wonderfully named husband Branch (yes, he is named for THAT Branch) and their son Todd. For three nights, we experienced life with no check-out times, a free place to do laundry, and a fridge full of food.

Baseball Across America: Chicago

Ballpark Digest

2015 What can I say that hasn’t been said before about one of the most storied places in baseball history? In my humble opinion, Wrigley is only rivaled by Fenway Park, and despite my late father’s love for the Red Sox, I have to say I enjoy visiting Wrigley even more. The fans are into the game, but they don’t live and die with every pitch. Red Sox games are fantastic, one-of-a-kind experience, but they are also an exhausting roller-coaster ride of emotion, where a Cubs game is an enjoyable day in the sun, win or lose.

Baseball Across America: Everett, Tacoma

Ballpark Digest

2015 Our visit to the Pacific Northwest did not include a chance to see the Seattle Mariners play in Safeco Field, their beautiful retractable-roof ballpark. With our travel schedule and the M’s schedule, there simply wasn’t a way to work it out. But, there were a couple wonderful consolation prizes for us in the form of the Everett AquaSox and the Tacoma Rainiers. These two teams are both Mariners affiliates, an arrangement that allows for easy movement of players and gives the front office the ability to evaluate minor leaguers in person. It’s also ideal for major-league rehab assignments. In fact, the last time I was in the Seattle area, we saw Jay Buhner play for the AquaSox, the Rainiers and then the Mariners as he completed his return from an injury. The AquaSox are members of the short-season Class A Northwest League, and the Rainiers belong to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.
