Melvin Barnes is an expert in administration for geriatrics, psychiatry, health and physical rehabilitation, and clinical social work.

Biography

MELVIN BARNES joined the social work adjunct faculty in 2017, teaching courses in integrative seminar and field practicum. He has more than 37 years of clinical and administrative experience in the fields of geriatrics, psychiatry, health and physical rehabilitation, and clinical social work and supervision.

A board-certified diplomate in clinical social work, he is licensed to practice clinical social work and psychotherapy in the state of Florida. He is also certified by the Academy of Certified Social Workers and holds advanced certification in hospice and palliative social work. As a self-employed clinical practitioner under PsychCare Services, LLC, he provides counseling and psychotherapy to residents of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.

Barnes has held a number of positions throughout his decades-long career. From 1976 to 1986, he worked as director of social work services and weekend administrator for the Brooklyn United Methodist Church Nursing Home. In this role, he supervised casework, developed the budget, and conducted utilization reviews to comply with federal and state regulations. He also served as assistant director of social work for the Bronx-Lebanon Special Care Center, director of social work services for Concourse Nursing Home and interim assistant director of social work services for Isabella Geriatric Center.

From 2004 to 2011, he was clinical supervisor and clinical manager of the Central Receiving and Access Centers and the Adult Outpatient Clinic at Lakeside Behavioral Healthcare. He also served as an on-call worker/home team social worker for VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, Inc., providing clinical hospice social work services to terminally ill patients and their families.

Barnes is a former adjunct instructor at the University of Central Florida’s School of Social Work, where he taught courses in social work research, clinical practice and program evaluation. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers’ Florida chapter and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
