Biography

Paul Wendel taught high school physics and mathematics for 18 years while earning master’s degrees in physics (Kent State, 2003) and education (University of Akron, 1998). Upon completing his PhD in Curriculum & Instruction (Kent State, 2008), he joined the physics faculty of Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, where he taught education, science, and research courses; served as planetarium director; and co-founded a farmer's market. After three years he left Mansfield to become a teacher developer with the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation in New Jersey. Now a member of the Education Department, Paul will teach education, science, and research courses at Otterbein. His research interests include teaching and classroom management, shale gas extraction, and creationism. Paul is married to Joyce and has one daughter, Emily. An avid bicycle commuter, Paul also enjoys running, chess, and has recently taken up sailing.

Given his position as an assistant professor of education at Otterbein University, it should be no surprise that Paul Wendel is big on teaching by example. Still, though, the extent to which he lives by that philosophy in his personal life exceeds the average observer’s expectations. Wendel is big on sustainability, and both his home and his daily habits bear out his commitment to it.
