Biography

STEVEN BUSH who joined the faculty in 2005 as a part-time lecturer, teaches social work practice and social work leadership courses.
He brings a passion for teaching and mentoring and uses a strength based approach to help his students develop both their professional skills and their identity as future social workers. In 2011, Bush received the Jane Addams Faculty Award, an honor graduating students bestow on a faculty member for superior academic, administrative and moral support.

Bush began his Social Work career in 1985 at Parker’s Residential Care, a facility for adults with developmental disabilities, but attributes the foundation of his professional growth to the eight years he worked at Boy’s Republic. Working with youth on probation, he developed an expertise in facilitating both psychoeducational and therapeutic groups while working with adolescents and their families.

In 1995, Bush joined Family Solutions, Inc. the second largest group home provider for abused and neglected children in Orange County. As director of residential services, he oversaw the programmatic operations of 13 six-bed group homes throughout Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles Counties, and was instrumental in the organization’s rise in becoming a leading provider of group home services in Southern California. During this time, Bush became the first non-county employee to serve as co-chair of the team decision making subcommittee, a part of Orange County Social Services Family to Family Initiative.

Bush then founded Family Compass, Inc. which provided relationship-building and life-coaching services to adolescent children and their families. As a life coach, he assisted families and individuals in setting and achieving personal and family goals while resolving interpersonal conflicts.

Bush began working as program director for Pacific Clinics Consumer Training Program in 2007, gaining expertise in training and mentoring individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Funded by the Mental Health Services Act, the consumer training program, in partnership with Santa Ana College, provided a comprehensive 160-hour certificate course that prepared participants to become certified paraprofessional mental health workers and offered students critical employability services. When the program closed in 2012 Bush and his staff had trained more than 350 individuals and family members who were affected by mental illness to become certified paraprofessional mental health workers.
