Cyber Defense Education with Dr. Rob Robertson

The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have designated Southern Utah University (SUU) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE). Presented with the certificate at the National Cyber Summit in June 2018, SUU is the only public university in Utah to receive this designation.

Centers of Academic Success in Cybersecurity are institutions and programs that have met meticulous requirements through careful assessment. These programs aim to reduce vulnerability in our national information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research and producing professionals with expertise in various disciplines.

Dr. Rob Robertson, Department Chair for the Computer Science & Information Systems programs at SUU, sees the potential for both the University and students attending the program.

“We see a lot of news about cyber security and a growing gap in the workforce, meaning there are a lot more jobs out there than we have qualified individuals to fill. This designation puts SUU into a National Community that is dedicated to improving the cyber security skills of professionals entering the industry. It is a great community to belong to, and will open many doors for the University and our students.”

According to the notification from the NSA and DHS, “[SUU’s] ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the National Information Infrastructure… Like all nations, the United States has a compelling interest in defending its vital national assets, as well as our core principles and values, and we are committed to defending against those who would attempt to impede our ability to do so. Education is the key to promoting these ideals.”

Teaching network security and advanced persistent threats at the graduate level, Dr. Robertson is actively engaged in research. His areas of focus include network security monitoring, intrusion analysis, log analysis, and advanced persistent threats. He is familiar with the media and available for an interview.
