Mueller Report Summary Leaves Probe into Trump Campaign Involvement with Russia Far from Over

The eagerly-awaited release of U.S. Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the

Mueller Report March 24 found that the Trump campaign did not collude with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election. It also stated that the report did not exonerate the President of illegally obstructing justice, but that there was insufficient evidence that Trump had committed that crime.

Reaction to the initial announcement has been swift from proponents of both sides of the issue. But, the probe into Trump and his campaign’s involvement with Russia and other matters is far from over, says Villanova Political Science Professor John Johannes.

“A lot will depend on the Attorney General and how much of the Mueller report he decides to release. One thing is certain: no matter what he does, the House Democratic committee leaders – Schiff, Cummings, Waters, Nadler – will continue to demand more and more, will call a slew of Trump people to testify, and will not let this die,” Johannes said.

But the Democrats could face unfavorable consequences following this tactic, he continued.

“I think that may be a mistake, because it will pressure the Democratic presidential candidates to push in the same direction, and that may hurt them down the road and will detract from the House working on much needed serious legislating. With the leftward push of many House Democrats, and, indeed, by many of the presidential candidates, voters will be confronted with unpleasant choices. All this can only help Trump – unless, of course, he does something counterproductive and unpopular, Johannes added.
