- Pioneered and popularized the discipline of agile marketing while at REI

- Educated over 250,000 people about content strategy via my public speaking

Content Strategy Interview with Jonathon Colman of Facebook

Top Rank Online Marketing online

2014-02-05

The subject of today’s post is Jonathon Colman, a Content Strategist at Facebook. Jonathon and I first met when I was programming a Search Marketing track for ad:tech. I had known of him through his participation in the search marketing industry and really appreciated his results focused approach to optimizing online marketing performance.

As a SEO at REI, Jonathon could not only show much revenue per keyword the company was making but also how much revenue was being lost because of slow loading web pages. I noticed he was also very attune to customer experience and content – something many SEOs are just catching on to now.

An insatiable learner (Masters in Information Science), wicked smart, focused on results, kind and thoughtful, Jonathan is definitely someone you can learn a lot from. In this interview he shares his journey from REI SEO to Content Strategist at Facebook, offering really useful tips, tools and resources along the way.

Sample Talks (4)

Building The Content-Driven Organization

Most eCommerce retailers understand that great content is an important part of building great experiences that drive customer conversion and loyalty. But few of them realize that inspiring content requires greater planning, management, and governance than just including a block of "Lorem ipsum..." in a page design.

In this talk, you'll learn how to build content into your organization from the ground-up so that it succeeds in meeting your user's goals while growing your brand. Content first!

Building the Inbound Marketing Organization

You're stuck at a cross-roads. You have organic search marketing, social media, a blog, some videos, and PR outreach. All of them take a lot of time and resources, but none of them are working particularly well. You're missing your goals and feeling stuck.

Enter inbound marketing: a set of strategies, processes, tactics, and metrics that are driven by the philosophy that you can drive attention, traffic, and conversions by using all of these channels. Together.

Don't buy attention; earn it!

Performance Matters: 10 Ways to Speed Up Your Web Site

Sure, everyone hates slow web sites. But did you know that for every one second of load time, your conversion rate drops by 7%? Or that most customers expect your web site to load in two seconds or less and 40% of them will bounce if it takes longer than three seconds? Or that the average Fortune 500 company's web site takes seven seconds to load?

Learn how to speed up your web site and keep your customers while driving additional traffic, conversions, satisfaction, and loyalty.

Agile Marketing: Four Ways to Rebuild Your Marketing Organization to Amaze Customers

You've reached the limits of what your marketing organization can create, produce, and promote. Metrics have plateaued, your teams are burnt out, and customer conversions are dropping.

Enter Agile Marketing: four strategies to place the customer first in your campaigns, to create efficient cross-functional teams, to maintain a bias toward action that removes barriers to progress, and that continually measures your success and learns from your mistakes.

Don't wait, go Agile now!
