The Memorial Day weekend was a busy one for airports and a sign that travel is on the increase as more Americans are vaccinated. Goizueta Associate Marketing Professor Saloni Firasta Vastani says leisure travel will lead the travel industry’s recovery but it will not be overnight.
- Travel will resume in the US as the CDC guidelines become friendlier to travel and more teenagers and children are eligible for vaccinations.
- International travel may still take two to three years for a complete recovery.
- Airlines are going to work hard to get people back on airplanes with low prices overall but some popular routes will see higher fares and prices will return to pre-pandemic levels in the more popular routes.
- The Covid-19 pandemic has deemed all historical data irrelevant for practical purposes, forcing airlines to use current booking and shopping data to plan fleet deployment and prices in the coming months.
