Since 1903, MSOE has been offering an applications-based education, partnering with leaders of business and industry to shape the institution’s development. Early supporters realized that their future depended upon educational institutions that could prepare men and women to fill newly created engineering and management positions.

Today, MSOE offers 17 bachelor’s degrees and 11 master’s degrees. The students who attend MSOE come from all parts of the United States and dozens of other countries. More than 20,000 alumni live and work throughout the United States and abroad, and nearly 2,000 of them own their own businesses or are officers of companies.

Twenty six teams of middle school students came to MSOE on Nov. 11, 2019 to compete in the annual Fluid Power Challenge. Each team of four students designed and built a fluid power mechanism that picked an object from one platform, rotated and placed it on another. The competition is designed to get middle school students excited about engineering and fluid power.

MSOE's 2019 Welcome Week

MSOE celebrated the grand opening of Dwight and Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019. The 65,536-square-foot building was made possible with a $34 million gift from MSOE alumnus Dwight Diercks and his wife Dian and features an NVIDIA GPU-powered supercomputer. With its new B.S. in Computer Science degree focused on artificial intelligence and the supercomputer, MSOE is forging new frontiers in AI education.

Are You Ready?

MSOE celebrated the grand opening of Dwight and Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall on Sept. 13, 2019. The 65,536-square-foot building features an NVIDIA GPU-powered supercomputer nicknamed "Rosie."  Rosie is housed in a state-of-the-art datacenter in Diercks Hall and is powered by more than 100 of the most advanced NVIDIA GPUs. 

Unique to MSOE, the supercomputer will be available to undergraduate students, offering them the ability to apply their learning in a hands-on environment to prepare for their careers. 

The name of this number-crunching behemoth was inspired by the women who programmed one of the earliest computers – the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC). This video explains the inspiration for the supercomputer's name and was shown at the grand opening event.

Industrial Engineering student Kiana Jeremiah has been working with her father on a special project, "Portrait of a Soldier," which is a traveling exhibit that honors the fallen soldiers of Illinois. The exhibit will be featured at Chicago's O'Hare Airport on Memorial Day.

For more than a decade, MSOE's Engineers Without Borders student chapter has received support from the Milwaukee Rotary Club for a series of engineering projects undertaken in Guatemala. Two current projects include construction of a new schoolhouse in Los Cerritos and re-design of Cardemom spice dryers. Participants who traveled to Guatemala in February bring us up to date on the progress.

The goal of this project was to develop an oxygen concentration system to address the need for medical oxygen in the developing world market. There is a need for medical oxygen in all institutions that provide care to patients suffering from a variety of acute and chronic conditions. This device is portable, has battery backup, and features an intuitive, graphical user interface.

Team Oxygen Concentrator - 2018 Senior Design

This design project designed and build a team of robots to compete against three other teams in a modified four-way "soccer" competition against other universities. A remote-controlled vehicle based on a highly maneuverable platform with a lithium polymer (LiPo) power source was designed. The robot took second place in the ASME design competition.

Dr. Michael Carriere, professor and Honors Program director at Milwaukee School of Engineering, is an urban historian with expertise in Milwaukee and Wisconsin history and politics, urban agriculture, creative placemaking, and the Milwaukee music scene.

 Facial Recognition: Convenience and Controversy Facial recognition technology is everywhere, making our day-to-day tasks faster and more convenient. It offers substantial benefits, from enhanced security measures to streamlined user experiences. Airports utilize it for faster check-ins, smartphones use it for secure authentication, and law enforcement agencies employ it for identifying suspects. 

However, the technology also raises considerable privacy concerns. The pervasive deployment of facial recognition without adequate oversight can lead to unwarranted surveillance, potential biases in profiling, and the erosion of personal privacy. 
  

    
The Rise of Deepfake Technology Meanwhile, deepfake technology has advanced rapidly, leveraging AI to create highly realistic synthetic, or "fake", media. These hyper-realistic videos, showing individuals doing or saying things they never actually did, have become a significant concern.
