Cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are rapidly becoming interconnected – creating new opportunities, new vulnerabilities and a growing need for professionals who understand both. At Augusta University, a new $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation will help prepare the next generation of professionals to work at that intersection. The School of Computer and Cyber Sciences received the award through the NSF’s Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Education Innovation and Scholarship for Service Program. The funding will support Augusta University Government-Ready Experts in Resilient CyberAI, or AUGER CyberAI. Michael Nowatkowski, PhD, professor and director of Augusta University’s Cyber Institute and head of Cyber Programs of Study, is the project’s principal investigator. The program reflects a fundamental shift in cybersecurity education. AI can be used as a tool to strengthen cybersecurity, but AI technologies themselves must also be secured. Augusta University is responding by integrating more AI into its cybersecurity curriculum, rather than treating the two disciplines as entirely separate fields. Participating undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students will take at least four cybersecurity courses and two artificial intelligence courses. Students can receive up to three years of funding covering tuition and fees, along with annual stipends of $27,000 for undergraduate students and $37,000 for graduate students. In return, graduates will put those skills to work in public service, with participants required to work for a federal executive branch agency for the same number of years they receive funding. The first cohort will begin in fall 2026, with approximately seven students expected in the inaugural group and another seven anticipated in 2027. As hacking attempts to undermine our elections have become the new normal, state governments are rushing to secure their voting systems with a $380-million fund from Congress before the midterms. Schwarzmann is a nationally-recognized expert in cybersecurity of voting technology, computer science research and education, and distributed systems. He has provided technological expertise to the State of Connecticut in cybersecurity and integrity of electronic election systems and led state-wide technological audits of voting systems. His own research programs have been supported by numerous grants totaling over $8.5 million from the National Science Foundation, including NSF Career Award, Air Force Office of Sponsored Research, State of Connecticut, NSF-NATO, and U.S. Election Assistance Commission, and other agencies.

Schwarzmann is an author of over 150 research articles and three books, and has edited a number of scholarly volumes on computer science research. He chaired a number of leading international conferences, and was a member of over 50 technical program committees. He served on several editorial boards, including IEEE Transactions on Computers and Information & Computation, two of the most venerable and prestigious journals in computer science.

Schwarzmann earned his bachelor’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, a master’s degree from Cornell University, and his doctoral degree from Brown University. He conducted post-doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

It’s tailored to meet the demands for data science professionals in Georgia and nationally.

The new data science curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in a data-driven world. Augusta University faculty says it promises to be a catalyst for innovation and economic development.

“Data science, along with machine learning, artificial intelligence is one of the hottest areas in terms of education and technology advancement nationally," Alexandar Schwarzmann, Dean of the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences says. "It globally rivals cyber security today."

Starting this fall, the program will highlight core data science competencies like machine learning and artificial intelligence.
