Biography

Knowledge is power.

Amy, like Angelina Jolie, is BRCA1 positive. While Jolie inherited her mutation from her mother, Amy inherited her BRCA 1 mutation from her father. Going back generations on her Dad's side of the family there is large family medical history of different cancers.) Amy is a PREVIVOR--meaning she is a survivor of a predisposition to cancer. In other words, she is someone at an extraordinarily high risk for cancer who has not actually had the disease. Amy had 2 preventative (prophylactic) surgeries in 2010 to drastically reduce her cancer risk. She is a passionate advocate for hereditary cancer awareness who has appeared in numerous magazine and news articles, many tv segments, and in front of many audiences sharing her story.

Amy's book, RESURRECTION LILY - A hereditary cancer memoir - Honoring the Past, Healing in the Present, & Hoping for the Future will be available early 2014. Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Archway Publishing
*All proceeds from Amy's book will being donated to FORCEs Lillian Byer HBOC (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer) Fund AND the Kristin Hoke Breast Health Program

Amy has an opportunity to share what she know about hereditary cancer and empower others. Her hope is that future generations will have more options available to them to reduce their cancer risk and ideally --the opportunity to eliminate their cancer risk altogether.

Testimonials (2)

Sherri Gilbert, Executive Director | Temple Beth El, West Palm Beach

You can always gauge the success of a speaker by how many audience members gather around afterwards to ask questions or share their own stories, and this was certainly true when Amy Byer Shainman spoke to the congregation of Temple Beth El in West Palm Beach during the Pink Shabbat service during breast cancer awareness month. There was a good blend of hard facts with personal experience that kept the audience's attention and left them better informed.

Constance "Conni" Murphy, ARNP, Cancer Risk Assessment and Genetics Program | Margaret Niedland Breast Center, Jupiter Medical Center

Amy is a passionate, dynamic, and excellent speaker. As a previvor, she shares her personal story with humor, grit and grace. She engages her audience and provides the incredible gift of knowledge and empowerment.
