“I was excited about being able to continue working with staff, faculty and students,” Smith said. “I think that we have a lot of unfinished work. We have a lot of unfinished things to do and collectively, I think that we can build upon that. I’m definitely blessed to be in this role, but the reality behind that is if I didn’t do a decent job building relationships, I would never have the opportunity. Because of students, staff and faculty, I’m in this role permanently.”

Smith accepts permanent post as dean of students for Western

BaShaun Smith has served as Western Carolina University’s interim associate vice chancellor and dean of students since June 2019 but permanently accepted the position as of May 1. “I decided to stay at WCU because of the amazing students we have here,” Smith said. “I would not be afforded this opportunity without the support of our students.”

BaShaun H.L. Smith was appointed associate vice chancellor and dean of students at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. He has served in these roles on an interim basis since June 2019. Dr.Smith came to WCU in June 2016 as the associate director of residence life. Two years later, he was named director of residence life. Earlier, he was the assistant director of residential education at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, from 2013-16.

WCU holds safe trick-or-treating event for surrounding community

BaShaun Smith, the Assistant Director of Residence Life, said in an email, “This event benefits the local community by providing a safe venue for children and their family to trick or treat without having to worry about location or weather… Additionally, the Resident Student Association was grateful that hall councils, fraternity and sororities dressed up and also provided candy for the children. Lastly, I think it is important for Western students to participate in events like this because it helps with building strong relationships with our local community.”
