Biography

Known for being fiercely competitive in many facets of her life, Bin Chang, PhD, credits her courage to be the best in getting her to where she is today. An Associate Professor of Finance and Finance Co-ordinator in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), Dr. Chang firmly believes that people become stronger through competition, and she encourages healthy competition among her undergraduate and graduate students.

Her own nature drives her research focus on the impact of global competition. At UOIT, she is conducting a first-of-its-kind international study on corporate governance, tracking the data of thousands of firms across 40 countries, for the next 10 years. Her study will investigate how corporate finance affects corporate dividend policies, and how those policies affect a firm’s risk.

Her notable experience spans over 15 years in both industry and academia. In 1998, she began her career as a registered lawyer in China’s Department of Justice, then pursued her Master of Finance degree from China's Wuhan University. In 2001 she was appointed foreign exchange analyst in the Bank of China’s Shenzhen Regional Office, before immigrating to Canada and completing a second Master of Financial Economics at Queen's University. In 2006, Dr. Chang held the position of credit derivatives analyst with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, analyzing credit and market risk from the trading floor. She transitioned to the world of academia in 2007, teaching Business Finance at the University of Toronto while completing her Doctorate in Philosophy in Finance. She joined UOIT's faculty as an assistant professor in 2008.

Her award-winning research has been published in the high-ranking Journal of International Business Studies; the International Journal of Managerial Finance where her paper Canadian Corporate Payout Policy received high honours in 2013; the Journal of Financial Research; Journal of Risk, Journal of Wealth Management; Canadian Investment Review; and Rotman International Journal of Pension Management.

Dr. Chang teaches undergraduate courses in Equity Asset Analysis, and Financial Institutions, and previously taught Finance I and Personal Finance. She has received several awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Dr. Chang serves on UOIT’s Pension and Benefits Committee, and Graduate Admissions and Scholarship Committee; and she has been nominated for a UOIT Teaching Award.
