He also served as medical director of Emory Healthcare’s Veterans Program, where they treat conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, and depression, and as co-director of the Emory Center of Psychedelics and Spirituality, the world’s first center to fully integrate clinical and research-based expertise in psychiatry and spiritual health.
His clinical research program focuses on the neurobiology, psychopharmacology, and personalized treatment of major depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. A federally-funded scientist, he has served as an investigator on more than 70 NIH- and industry-funded clinical studies of medication, psychotherapy, and their combination for the treatment for those conditions.
He is a graduate of Mayo Medical School and completed a residency in psychiatry and a master’s in clinical research at Emory.

New 6-month data from Compass Pathways' phase 3 COMP006 trial show that patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) who responded but did not remit after a single dose of COMP360 psilocybin continued to gain benefit through week 26, with nearly 30% reaching remission following a second dose. Before these substances are approved for use in adopted clinical treatment, however, more study is needed, according to Boadie Dunlop, director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the other founder and co-director of ECPS. In this year's talks, Dunlop proposed three clinical trials—one to develop a method to determine when a patient is ready for dosing, another to determine if some psychedelics work best for patients with specific psychological, social or biological factors, and another to investigate whether gains from psychedelic-assisted therapy can best be maintained post-treatment by rapidly introducing antidepressants, a specific course of psychotherapy, or additional psychedelic sessions. “These are all things we will want to know and work with when these substances are ultimately FDA approved,” says Dunlop.
