When Immigrants & Refugees Flood Our Shores



Dr. Cherrie Short, CBE, is the Associate Dean of Global & Community Initiatives, and professor of practice at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work in Los Angeles, California, as well as a visiting scholar at the University of Wales, Cardiff. Before taking on her role in research and academia, Dr. Short served in Tony Blair’s administration in the U.K. for over 10 years as an elected politician and as a U.K. Race Equality and Human Rights Commissioner. She also served as the Race Equality Commissioner for Wales, in which she oversaw all race relations in Wales, including the Race Relation Laws for the National Assembly of Wales. As commissioner, she worked to use the commission’s legal powers to improve access to justice and promote social equality.

She received the esteemed CBE award (Commander of the British Empire), one of the UK’s highest public service awards given by Queen Elizabeth II, for her extensive work in race relations and human rights.

Dr. Short is an experienced advocate for social justice, and a qualified forensic social worker focusing on global approaches to social injustices. Her work has contributed to major social policy changes in local and central governments. She is a is a highly sought after keynote speaker.
