With 20 years of experience, Christa Casey has become an expert in auditing not-for-profit organizations.
Christa joined Welch LLP in 1995 as a co-op student and began full-time in 1997, after completing her Bachelor of Commerce with a specialization in Accounting from the University of Ottawa. She obtained her Chartered Accountant designation in 1999. Christa is fluently bilingual and works with clients and staff members in the language of their choice.
In January 2010, Christa was appointed Welch LLP’s Director, Not-for-Profit Sector because of her extensive experience in auditing not-for-profit organizations. Prior to this, Christa was a Quality Assurance Manager for nearly four years. Her previous and current position requires a high level of technical competence while staying informed of all developments in accounting and auditing standards.
In 2014, Christa was honoured to be a recipient of the Ottawa Business Journal’s Forty under 40 award. She also received her certification that year for CPA Ontario’s Not-for-Profit and Charity Finance Leadership program.
For seven years, Christa was a Practice Inspector and then a File Reviewer for CPA Ontario. Her work in practice inspection involved reviewing the work and quality assurance policies of public accounting firms throughout Ontario to ensure that they are compliant with auditing, accounting and ethical standards. In 2015, Christa was appointed as a member of CPA Ontario’s Practice Inspection Committee. Christa also teaches risk based auditing standards to Welch staff and develops tools to assist them in the risk assessment process for each audit engagement.

Risks to NPOs are defined as threats to the organization’s ability to accomplish its mission or stop the NPO’s ability to pursue opportunities. Management and the Board of Directors need to always be vigilant of these risks and proactively deal with the organization’s ability to recognize and respond effectively to the following 8 risks.
One challenge NPOs face in considering a social enterprise is that, historically, they have focused on generating a net social return for their efforts. They have not, however, typically focused on generating a financial return. This adjustment to their mindset is not easily done. A social enterprise is seen as a means to develop a model that provides a blended return i.e. both social and financial.
The financial management teams of not-for-profit organizations spend a lot of time and effort on the annual year-end financial reporting packages for the Board of Directors, major stakeholders or members at the Annual General meeting. Having worked with hundreds of NPOs and boards and attended an equivalent number of AGMs, we would like to share 5 helpful tips on preparing the financial reporting packages.
