Laser Lab To Receive $99.4 Million in Federal Funds

The Rochester Beacon  online

2024-03-12

The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics is slated to receive $99.4 million in fiscal 2024 for its Omega laser facility.

The funds, which come from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration’s Inertial Confinement Fusion program, was included in a “minibus” package of six appropriations bills.

The new funding will be used to conduct research in support of the NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship and Management Program, which maintains the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear deterrent, UR officials say. It will also enable the facility to continue its work in fusion and understanding matter at extreme conditions, and ensure that researchers can access the facilities into the 2030s.

“Every year, our facilities conduct 80 percent of the NNSA’s sponsored high-energy-density and fusion shots for the national laboratories’ and other academic researchers,” says Chris Deeney, director of LLE.

Local Academics and Engineers Part of Groundbreaking Fusion Announcement

Scientists have for the first time produced more energy in a fusion reaction than was used to ignite it — and some from Rochester had a hand in the process.

Christopher Deeney is Director of the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, which has been working on this project for some time. He said there were indications some months ago that researchers would be able to hit this milestone.

“A year ago we started mapping out what we had to do differently because this was a major scientific result for the community, that told us that this particular approach to fusion, can be made to work,” said Deeney.

Construction Begins on UR Laser Lab Expansion

Work is underway on a $42 million expansion at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

The new three-floor building, which will connect to the existing building on East River Road in Brighton, will include 66,000-square-feet of lab and office space for approximately 110 employees.

"I always joke that we call Rochester the Flower City; I call it the Photon City," said Christopher Deeney, director of the laser lab. "Between the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, our legacy research in imaging development with Kodak, what we're doing now at L3 Harris for imaging, this is the place to do optics and laser technology in this country. This will be a great new attractor in building the legacy of this city, this region."
