Biography

Dr. Christopher Hansen (he/him) is thrilled to be joining the Department of Sociology at LMU! As a sociologist, Dr. Hansen uses quantitative survey methods to advance the health and well-being of sexual and gender minority (SGM) and other historically marginalized groups. His research focuses on sexual orientation and gender identity measurement in the context of SGM and general population survey studies. He is particularly interested in how SGM status intersects with other systems of stratification, including age and race/ethnicity. Dr. Hansen’s current projects explore the measurement of gender expression in surveys of youth, strategies to improve the health of people aging with HIV, and the contributions of W.E.B. Du Bois to U.S. survey science.

Dr. Hansen earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Loyola University Chicago and was most recently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois Chicago. He has longstanding ties with NORC at the University of Chicago, a social science research firm, where he has had the opportunity to collaborate on projects funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Resources Services Administration, and National Institutes of Health. Teaching is one of Dr. Hansen’s most singular passions, and he is excited to engage LMU students on the use of sociological theory and method to answer their questions about the social world.
