Dr. Hergott is a licensed physical therapist who specializes in aging and exercise. She is a Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist, an ACSM-Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist, and an APTA-Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults. She promotes physical activity and fall prevention through her work on the APTA-NCOA Task Force, APTA Geriatrics Health and Wellness Special Interest Group, and the Exercise is Medicine Clinical Practice Committee.

Colleen Hergott, DPT, an associate professor of physical therapy in the College of Allied Health Sciences, received the Certificate in Teaching Excellence for Student Success this semester. She praised the work of the Center for Instructional Innovation, mentioning the incredible number of resources available to faculty as well as the unwavering support the team has for faculty campus wide.

“The CII faculty are so helpful and ready to support us as faculty however they can,” Hergott said. “The workshops are excellent; they’re super engaging and practical. I always come away with something to use in my classroom.”

Interprofessional healthcare teams are essential for meeting the needs of our older population. To prepare for interprofessional collaboration, educational programs should offer opportunities for interprofessional education. We created a four-hour geriatric interprofessional workshop addressing cognition, macular degeneration, dysphagia, home safety, fall risk, and pharmacotherapy to examine student perceptions of working in interprofessional teams and their attitudes toward geriatric patients.

Stopping Falls: A United Initiative among Physical Therapy Educators

Falls are not a normal part of aging and pose a significant health risk to older adults. Physical therapists have a role in fall risk management. Preparation to manage falls varies across Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curricula. This paper describes how six DPT programs integrated community-based fall prevention through the STOP (Screen one-Thousand Older adults to Prevent) Falls initiative.
