Doctoral Faculty - Media Psychology | Fielding Graduate University

Santa Barbara, CA, UNITED STATES

Experienced researcher, methodologist, and statistician who loves to coach students on their research journey

Dr. Daniel Sewell brings over 25 years of widely varied academic, administrative, research and practitioner experience to his work on the Media Psychology faculty at Fielding. Dr. Sewell received a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Emory University in 1985, after which he was recruited to a research & development company to design and develop advanced computing systems to adaptively aid the performance of pilots and others working with complex mechanical and organizational systems. Since then, his professional journey has combined scholarship, practice, teaching, and leadership in traditional and non-traditional academic settings as well as management, research and development in business settings.

Prior to joining the Media Psychology faculty, Dr. Sewell served as Provost & Executive Vice President at Saybrook University from 2011- 2014 where he was responsible for all aspects of the academic operations of the university. He led the enrollment management effort to the highest enrollment in Saybrook’s history, as well as four new graduate degree program proposals and a university structural change proposal through accreditor approval and subsequent implementation. Previously, Dr. Sewell served at Fielding Graduate University from 2000- 2011. At his departure, he was Associate Provost for Research & Learning and on the faculty in the Media Psychology doctoral program. His portfolio included development of the research culture, institution- wide responsibility for the online academic environment, educational effectiveness evaluation, university accreditation, library services, research grants and contracts, and information technology. A few achievements within his areas of responsibility included: growth from no external funding to over $2M total sponsored projects funding, leadership of a regional reaccreditation process resulting in a 10-year reaccreditation cycle, and redevelopment of the competency-based evaluation system in the doctoral and masters programs.

Dr. Sewell’s service work reflects two of his primary interests. As a scholar-practitioner, he has enjoyed his role as a co-founder and member of the Worldwide Network for Gender Empowerment (WNGE). As an activist dedicated to social justice, he has supported the work of WNGE members that ranges from village level projects to improve girls' education, to national efforts to improve the status of health care providers, to international efforts to help victims of natural and man-made disasters.
