Mr. Hammond enrolled in a graduate seminar I taught two years ago on Darwinian approaches to literature and completed outstanding work in every way. His participation in class discussion was a model for students and instructor alike--curious and good-natured, but critical at the same time--and both of his papers connected the most intricate of details in selected primary texts to the larger themes of the course.
