Biography
A true generalist in the discipline, Dr. Murray has been teaching a wide variety of communication studies courses at Loyola Marymount University for more than 32 years. He has also taught courses at California State University, Northridge, California State University Bakersfield, and several Southern California community colleges. While he focuses primarily on communication theory and research methods, he has taught most of the courses offered in the Communication Studies curriculum; he has a deep and abiding interest in all areas that compose the discipline. Early in his career, Dr. Murray left teaching to take a position as the Director of Research and Employee Development for a large for-profit corporation in downtown Los Angeles. While he found this an invaluable learning experience, after a few years he returned to teaching (and is considerably more personally and professionally satisfied as a result). In his research, Dr. Murray uses a variety of both qualitative and quantitative methods to conduct applied, socially significant research with a critical edge. He also offers independent communication training and consulting services tailored to the needs of individuals and organizations. Dr. Murray holds a BA in Deaf Studies/Linguistics and an MA in Communication from California State University, Northridge. Later in his career, while simultaneously working full time, Dr. Murray earned an interdisciplinary doctorate in the field of Social Psychology from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California, 2009.
