DEBORAH HAYES is an adjunct lecturer and serves as a field liaison and supervisor for Master of Social Work interns assigned to military-related field placements. She also teaches a course on social work practice in school settings.

A licensed clinical social worker, she has worked with at-risk children and their families within outpatient mental health services and in public education/school mental health programs. She has expertise in program development, supervision and clinical intervention in specialized school-based projects involving trauma, grief and loss, prenatal substance exposure, early childhood mental health, special education and family engagement.

Hayes has a particular interest in addressing the needs of military women (service members, veterans and spouses/partners), as well as children within military families. She has supported the efforts of the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office and USC’s Building Capacity and Welcoming Practices in Military Connected Schools, in collaboration with the LA Unified School District’s Health and Human Services, in the development and implementation of the district’s military student identifier. She provides resources and consultation to school districts and the community at large.

Hayes is co-chair of the Families and Children working group within the Los Angeles Veterans Collaborative; a member of the Governance and Training committees of Maternal Mental Health NOW; a member of the Didi Hirsch MFAR Advisory Committee; and a member of the Los Angeles Fatherhood Network Advisory Committee at Children’s Institute, Inc.

She earned a Doctor of Psychology in organizational management and consulting from Phillips Graduate Institute. She received a master’s degree in social work with a concentration in community mental health/school social work and a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in maternal and child health from the University of California, Berkeley. She also holds a Parent/Infant Mental Health Certificate from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California.
