Culminating a 7-year pursuit, including 4 U.S. National Top Ten Awards and National Reserve Champion Saddle Seat Equitation in 1979, Derek achieved his dream! Saddle Seat Equitation is an English-style genre that teaches youth proper posture and techniques to maximize the performance of your horse. It may be compared to gymnastics where the execution of a routine is required AND the athlete must look great while executing.

Derek gained many gifts during his cancer experience, the most profound may have been learning that there are worse things than dying! His participation in the, "Living Well with Cancer" support group contributed to one of Derek's several creative/non-fiction poems that he rendered in which he wrote: Cancer has taken so many things, Maybe my life before I'm done. But if I never surrender my will, Even if I die, I've won!
