Biography

Avraham Cohen holds a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia (UBC). He teaches in the Masters in Counselling Program at City University of Seattle, and he has been a psychotherapist in private practice for over twenty years in Vancouver, BC, Canada. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of counselling and education, especially on the subject of eastern philosophy and its practice applications in both psychotherapy and classroom settings. Dr. Cohen has presented his work at national as well as international conferences.

Dr. Cohen received the 2007-2008 President's Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Discipline of Counselling from the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. As well, Dr. Cohen and his partner Dr. Heeson Bai received the 2008 Professional Article Award from the Canadian Counselling Association for their co-authored article, Suffering loves and needs company: Daoist and Zen perspectives on the counsellor as companion.

Dr. Cohen’s first book publication, based on his Ph.D. dissertation, is Gateway to the Dao-Field: Essays for the Awakening Educator (2009, Cambria). His most recent book publication is Speaking of Teaching: Inclinations, Inspirations, and Innerworkings (2012, Sense). He is currently working on The Human Dimension in Education: Essays for the Awakening Educator (Writeroom Press), a revised version of Gateway to the Dao-Field: Essays for the Awakening Educator.

Dr. Cohen is Principal Faculty at City University of Seattle (Vancouver BC, Canada site) in the Masters in Counselling Program.
