Biography

Dr Sparks role is to act as a connection between the research community and policy makers working in areas relating to sustainable biomass supply and utilisation.

She is passionate about the sustainable production of energy, chemicals, and materials, and the roles of scientific research and good policy in supporting this.

As a Policy Fellow Joanna provides an important connection between academic researchers and government policy makers in the area.

Her goal is to increase policy engagement by network and to harness the expertise of our members to have a real impact on policy.

She works within the Supergen Bioenergy Hub, and three of the BBSRC Networks in Industrial Biotechnology (the High Value Biorenewables Network, the Biomass Biorefinery Network, and the Carbon Recycling Network) as a Biomass Policy Fellow.

Not only does Dr. Sparks's role as a policy fellow allow her to work in an interesting and complex field, but it requires her to continuously learn and develop her understanding, utilise her experience as a science communicator, and build relationships across academia, industry, and government – challenges which she relishes and thoroughly enjoys.
