Biography
In addition to being the Director of the Arthritis Program and head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at UHN, Dr. Mahomed is also the Director of the Total Joint Network and Managing Director of Altum Health, which provides innovative solutions for rehabilitation and disability management.
Dr. Mahomed’s primary research focus is on evaluating the interventions and outcomes for arthritis in the hips and knees. Dr. Mahomed’s expertise in evaluating outcomes of total joint replacement surgery has helped shape health-policy decisions and have resulted better access to treatment.
He has been instrumental in establishing the Total Joint Network, a partnership between 26 hospitals and health-care centres across Metro Toronto which provide an integrated, evidence-based care for joint replacement surgery.
Following his graduation from the University of Toronto, Dr. Mahomed completed a Doctor of Science in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Mahomed completed both his orthopaedic training and arthroplasty fellowship at U of T and is currently a U of T Professor of Surgery. He is also a member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, National Standards Committee, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Knee Society and the Hip Society.
Under Dr. Mahomed’s leadership, the Arthritis Program at Toronto Western Hospital has adopted a vision to find a cure for Arthritis and a mission to create a world leading centre for the research and clinical care of the disease. The program is currently Canada’s largest multi-disciplinary Arthritis Program. The Division of Rheumatology is ranked Number One in North America. The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery provides the most complex surgical treatments for patients with arthritis in Canada.
