Biography
Fr. Dorian Llywelyn, S.J., is Director of Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Ignatian Spirituality. A Jesuit priest from Wales, he is the first Welsh Jesuit since 1679. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Wales, as well as degrees from universities in Spain and the United States. He has lived and worked in nine countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, and is fluent in Spanish, Welsh, and English, with competency in several other languages.
Fr. Llywelyn served for fourteen years on the faculty of LMU’s Department of Theological Studies and as Director of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute. He has also held senior leadership roles at Santa Clara University and served as President of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California. His scholarly work examines the relationship between Catholicism and nationalism, with particular attention to Mariology, popular religiosity, and Catholic identity in public life.
He is the author of Toward a Catholic Theology of Nationality and Sacred Place, Chosen People, and is currently co-editing a multidisciplinary international volume on Our Lady of Guadalupe. He has been interviewed by the Associated Press and other international media outlets on Catholic teaching concerning miracles and the Church’s discernment of sainthood causes, including cases in which the Vatican determines that canonization should not proceed (absit canonizatio).
Fr. Llywelyn is a frequent contributor to the BBC on Catholicism, American religion, and U.S. politics, and regularly provides commentary on Vatican affairs, papal transitions, and global Catholicism for international media. His current interests also include the ethical and theological implications of artificial intelligence in light of Catholic social teaching.
