Biography
Author Heather Huffman writes romantic suspense novels with strong female leads who refuse to lose hope. With 500,000 readers, Heather sees her books as a way to not only entertain, but to raise awareness of a cause she’s deeply committed to: fighting human trafficking, the reality of modern day slavery.
Heather first learned about the issues of modern-day slavery while conducting Internet research for her novel Throwaway, and it shocked her to realize there was a vast and pervasive evil thriving right under our noses, and most people weren’t even aware of it.
In 2011, Heather decided to use her creative talents to become a voice for the voiceless. To do so, she started to give away e-books for free to raise awareness for the fight against human trafficking. Her e-books were downloaded over 50,000 times in a matter of months, and she received a request for permission to translate them into Russian. When asked about her journey, Heather says, “Speaking to those directly impacted—investigators, victims, families of victims—puts a face to the numbers, and that changes everything.”
At the same time Heather was beginning her fight against slavery, her life was forever changed when 7-year-old son had a near-death experience. The tragedy forever changed their lives, reinforcing the sacredness and importance of family and furthering her conviction that all children are worth fighting for. The recovery process solidified the family’s conviction that something needed to be done to combat slavery, and helped her children empathize with the issues other children face in the world.
When Booktrope, a Seattle start-up publishing company, approached Heather in mid-2011, she recognized an opportunity to share her stories with a much larger audience. She now dedicates a portion of her author royalties to the organizations she knows and trusts that are on the front line fighting against human trafficking.
Heather is a dynamic, passionate, well-informed speaker who is capable of bringing together and communicating with a wide spectrum of people from various walks of life. At her speaking engagements, she works to help others find practical ways they, too, can get involved and use their talents to make a difference.
