Biography

Dr. Irene Malaty is the Barbara Padgett Dein Professor of Parkinson Disease and serves as Chief of the Movement Disorders division at the department of neurology and Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases. She directs Parkinson Foundation and Tourette Association Centers of Excellence at UF. She is the former president of the Florida Society of Neurology and currently an executive board member of the Parkinson Study Group. She is on the steering committees of the International Movement Disorder Society Parkinson’s Disease non-motor symptom study group and Tourette study groups. Her research includes clinical trials in movement disorders, a safe hospitalization initiative for Parkinson’s disease and other projects exploring non-motor aspects of movement disorders.

People with Parkinson’s often struggle with sleep disturbances and early morning OFF symptoms, which can seriously affect their health-related quality of life. It is essential to comprehensively assess the value of PD treatments, and ignoring these symptoms in economic evaluations underestimates their true impact.
