Biography
Jennifer McMahon has been teaching literature and writing at graduate and undergraduate levels all over the world, including Hunter College in New York City, The University of Hong Kong, and now at Loyola Marymount University. Her areas of interest include Modernist literature, 20th century American literature, and colonial/post-colonial literature. Her manuscript, published by the University of Philippines Press, about the American colonization of the Philippines won the National Book Award in Literary Criticism in 2012. She has also published commentary in The Washington Post. She is currently working on a novel based on her extensive archival research on the colonization of the Philippines.

Hong Kong, a city about the size of New York, is always trying to control the pandemic.
As an American citizen who spends time each year in both cities, I have lived through what feels like a bipolar response to covid-19. It is almost as if Hong Kong and the United States are dealing with different diseases.
