Criminologist and white collar crime expert aims to better understand occupational and organizational offending

Biography

Criminologist Jordan Harel, PhD, aims to better understand white collar criminal offending, and consequently help prevent its victimization. A Lecturer in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, and a social justice advocate, Dr. Harel joined UOIT in 2013, and teaches courses including Issues in Organized Crime, Social Control, and Cybercrime.

His journey to criminology began with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Human Behaviour - Psychological and Social Perspectives at the University of Western Ontario (UWO). The financial crisis of 2008 prompted growing attention to the issue of white collar crime, intriguing Dr. Harel who earned a Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology at the University of Waterloo. In an effort to connect business with criminology, he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology at UWO. His doctoral research explored the notion of the exceptionality of white collar criminals. For his analysis, he examined the criminal backgrounds and substance abuse histories of white collar offenders, comparing them to other types of offenders. Additionally, his work also led to the creation of a typology of occupational offending. He is currently supervising undergraduate research on digital piracy and white collar crime.

In 2015, he was awarded a UOIT Teaching and Innovation Fund grant to create two videos to foster a sense of community and awareness of services to help new students succeed academically in a supportive campus environment. He also serves on a number of university committees.
