Biography

José García Moreno (born 1961, Mexico City) studied at the renowned Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU), where he trained in the Czech animation tradition and worked as an apprentice at the legendary Bratři v Triku (Brothers in Trick) studios founded by Jiří Trnka. Under this historic banner, he directed his first professional film. He later completed a Master of Fine Arts at UCLA.

During the 1980s, García Moreno was producer and creative director for two of Mexico City’s most influential radio stations, Rock 101 and Opus 94.

His animated and live-action films have been screened and awarded at major international festivals including Annecy, Anima Mundi, Clermont-Ferrand, Guadalajara, and Cannes. He has received prizes at festivals in Havana, Toronto, San Francisco, Mexico City, Montreal, and Japan, and has been nominated for the Ariel Award by the Mexican Film Academy. He is also a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Grant.

In 2010, he was named one of the 'Academic Leaders of the World' by the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), where he co-produced four student films addressing slavery and human trafficking in collaboration with the Coalition for the Abolition of Slavery and Human Trafficking (CAST).

At Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Los Angeles, he has served as Chair of the Animation Department, as a member of the University’s Strategic Planning Committee, and as Chair of the Strategic Committee for Internationalization.

He has been a juror for Mexico’s National Endowment for the Arts (FONCA) and for the McLaren-Lambart Award. In 2013, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) published his reflections on narrative technique and visual storytelling. His animated films are part of the collections of the Luis Ángel Arango Library in Colombia and the Federal German Film Catalogue.

In 2018, he received the Kennedy Center Theater Festival’s 'Meritorious Animation Award'. His work is featured in 'Animation: A World History' by Giannalberto Bendazzi, a landmark reference in the field.

Since 2020, García Moreno has served as Director of the 'Academy of Catholic Thought and Imagination (ACTI)' at LMU. In 2023, his film 'Long is the Way to Heaven' was selected for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival as part of the official program celebrating the history and legacy of Mexican animation.

The goal of this animation workshop resides on the idea of tactility and relation to the animated object through the lens of the Surrealist avant-garde movement. Historical and artistic references would be made to Central European animation, especially Czech auteurs like Jan Svankmajer.

Anima Mundi Marks Merger

LMU Magazine  print

2024-01-10

For three nights this past December, the façade of Sacred Heart Chapel became a massive video screen. Projected onto the chapel was an original multimedia presentation — “Anima Mundi/Soul of the World” — celebrating the 50th anniversary of the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College. The stunning visual work was created by Jose García Moreno, director of the LMU Academy of Catholic Thought and Imagination and special assistant to the provost.

Moreno said his work was intended to celebrate the collaboration of LMU’s three sponsoring religious communities, along with honoring the Tongva and Mexican heritages of Southern California. He used the Sacred Heart Chapel façade, he said, to project a multimedia event that relates the animation medium with technology, art, ministry, and mission.

The presentation was accompanied by original music composed by LMU President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., with a choir directed by John Flaherty, interim director of Choral Activities.

“For me, as an animator and a storyteller, it is a labor of love,” Moreno said.

The LMU Academy of Catholic Thought and Imagination is creating a live multimedia show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College with a multimedia presentation with Sacred Heart Chapel as the backdrop. “Anima Mundi / The Soul of the World” will take place Dec. 3, 4, and 5 at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

The process of creating “Anima Mundi / Soul of the World” required animation, 3D printing, and high-definition video mapping projection. The show includes music composed by President Timothy Law Snyder and the participation of a live choir. José García Moreno is the mastermind behind this show. LMUTW interviewed García Moreno to discuss this celebration of LMU’s legacy and future.
