1st Black Woman in Canada to Produce A Movie (professional)

1995-01-01

1995 Karen King became the first black woman in Canada to produce a movie. It was enttitled Rude, directed by Clement Virgo and co-produced with Damon D'Oliveira.

1st Black Producer in Canada with a World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (professional)

Karen King produced Rude and became the first black woman in Canada with a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The film premiered at Un Certain Regard in 1995. Directed by Clement Virgo, and co-produced.

Woman of Honor (personal)

2013-05-22

2013 Woman of Honour award was presented by the Black Business and Professional Association for the work Karen has done throughout her career advancing the careers of others in the film and television industry. "It was a wonderful honour to be honoured in this way."

Excellence in Media Award (professional)

This prize was awarded to Karen King at the Pride Newspaper's African Canadian Achievement Awards. Coming at the end of her career as a producer as she moved into broadcasting Karen King was able to acknowledge all who had played a pivotal role in career to that point.
