Biography
Kate Astall is a qualified solicitor and lecturer in law at Leeds Law School. She holds a first-class degree in Politics and went on to study the Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course before embarking on a successful career in legal practice.
As a solicitor she was involved in a number of high-profile criminal cases. She specialised in complex crime and criminal appeals, civil liberties work and serious personal injury (often related to military personnel). Kate's work saw her regularly instructed in cases which were heard in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. She also made numerous applications to the European Court of Human Rights and has prosecuted on behalf of national sports bodies in connection with child protection cases.
After completing her Masters whilst in practice, Kate joined Leeds Law School in 2019 as a full time lecturer. She teaches at both undergraduate and post graduate level and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Kate’s research focuses on the impact of the media on the criminal justice system. She is particularly interested in press regulation, media bias and press freedom. Kate is also interested in miscarriage of justices where there has been a media influence.
